On February 17, 2009, Allen Stanford of Stanford International Bank Ltd was charged by the SEC with fraud and multiple violations of U.S. securities laws for running an approximated $7 billion Ponzi scheme. On March 6, 2012, Stanford was convicted on all charges except a single count of wire fraud. However, today, Stanford has asked for a new trial because U.S. District Judge David Hittner let reporters send Twitter messages from the courtroom. This last resort act represents a new low for crooked financiers.

Unlike fellow professor Nouriel Roubini (aka Dr. Doom), who has recently been discussing the inevitable occurrence and magnitude of another recession, Spence takes a slightly more optimistic approach on the issue.
