Traditionally, U.S. carriers (ie: airlines) stay away from owning their own fuel assets, but Delta, today, made an acquisition that goes against this tradition. Delta finalized a deal that would give them ownership of a ConocoPhillips refinery for $180 million. Rather than having to rely on various parties to supply the necessary fuel, Delta decided that it would no longer be subjected to the negotiations surrounding fuel costs and would instead focus on saving both time and money with its own refinery.
